You can recruit companions in Starfield to assist with your travels across the stars.
Some companions are more closely linked the story - like the four Constellation companions - but all have their own Skills that can help you in combat, space travel, cooking, Outpost management, and more!
Below, we've got a list of all companions available in Starfield, along with an explainer on companions and crew members, and how to hire companions.

Starfield companions and crew members explained
We've found 28 companions who can join your crew in Starfield. Companions are named characters who have their own backgrounds, can follow you around, and carry your stuff. However, the four Constellation companions are the 'main' companions, as they have the most interactions with the player, story related to the main quest, individual companion quests, and are your romance options.
The four Constellation companions in Starfield are: Sarah Morgan, Barrett, Sam Coe, and Andreja.
In addition to named companions, there are generic crew members you can hire to work at your Outposts or on your ship. When hiring crew members you only have to pay them a one-time fee (which is negotiable with persuasion). Unnamed generic crew members like 'Outpost Management Specialist' and 'Ballistic Specialist' are there to help out with ship and outpost gameplay specifically, and don't have any involvement in Starfield's story and can't follow you. If a crew member has a name, however, they can also be a companion and travel with you.
How to hire companions and crew members in Starfield
To hire the four Constellation companions (and a few extra characters) you have to complete main missions, but apart from them, you can hire companions and crew members by finding them at space ports, bars, inns, and taverns.
Make sure to check out places where people gather to eat, drink, or sleep, and you'll spot more potential named companions and generic crew members. We've got all of the companions' locations detailed further down though if you're after a specific character.
Can you romance companions in Starfield?
Yes, you can romance companions in Starfield, but not all of them. Even though there are over 20 named companions, you can only romance the four Constellation members: Sam Coe, Sarah Morgan, Barrett, and Andreja.
So, other named companions and generic crew members with no name are not romanceable in Starfield.
Where to find Adoring Fan in Starfield
How to get: Pick the 'Adoring Fan' Trait.

This annoying Oblivion character is reborn in Starfield as your main character's very own adoring fan. Although he doesn't have a name, the Adoring Fan is considered a full companion, so can follow you around and carry your stuff. For more details, check out our Adoring Fan explainer.

How to get: Complete 'Operation Starseed' mission.

Yes, that Amelia Earhart. We won't spoil the specifics of how that's possible, but you need to complete the Operation Starseed mission obtained from investigating the distress call you get from travelling to Charybdis III in the Charybdis star system in order to recruit Amelia as a companion in Starfield.

Andreja is a Constellation companion, so she's linked to the main story, gets her own companion mission, and has some of the most interactions available with your character. All you have to do to get Andreja is continue with the main story until you complete the 'Into The Unknown' mission.

Andromeda Kepler is a writer with quite the name, and you can recruit her by heading to the Broken Spear bar in Cydonia, to the right of the main entrance. We missed her the first time we came to the bar, so it's possible Andromeda likes to wander sometimes. If you sit down to use the 'Wait' system, then Andromeda should eventually appear for you in the bar if you don't spot her anywhere.
Where to find Autumn MacMillan in Starfield
How to get: Complete the Freestar Rangers questline.

You'll meet Autumn near the end of the Freestar Rangers missions, but it seems you have to complete the questline first in order to hire Autumn as a companion. You'll find her back at the Red Mile when you want to add her to your crew.

As a Constellation member, Barrett is one of the four main companions available in Starfield. This means he's linked to the main story, gets his own companion mission, and has some of the most interactions available with your character. All you have to do is progress with the main Constellation storyline to eventually recruit him.

How to get: Lucky Lu ship distress call (Heinlein I orbit - Heinlein system).

Betty Howser is a bounty hunter, and you can find her by docking at the Lucky Lu ship orbiting the Heinlein I planet in the Heinlein system. You should bring a Ship Part with you before docking at the Lucky Lu, as this is her recruitment cost.
Where to find Dani Garcia in Starfield
How to get: Recruit at the Euphorika bar in Neon's Ebbside area (Volii Alpha - Volii system).

Dani is located in the Euphorika bar on Neon, which is found in the city's Ebbside area, through the Ebbside entrance accessible near Terrabrew in Neon's Core - the main hub area. Just agree to let her continue her research and you can recruit Dani for a pretty low price, especially if you lower it with persuasion.
Where to find Erick Von Price in Starfield
How to get: Pick up the 'Star-up Stopped' quest from Jane Weller in Cydonia's Residential area (Mars - Sol system).

Erick is actually missable if you don't make the right choices during the 'Start-up Stopped'. To make sure you get him, head to Berry Mule ship by following the quest marker, hail it, and pick these dialogue options:
- I've been asked to find that ship. But first, I want to know what's going on here.
- The owner of that ship would like it returned. I wish to resolve this peacefully if possible.
Choose these options when speaking with Gustav after docking the ship:
- We're cool. I don't want trouble either, but I need to talk to you about this ship.
- Erick's telling the truth. I think there's been a mistake.
- I can't argue with your logic. Keep the ship, but I'm asking you to let Erick go.
With Erick safe, you can untie him and return to Jane Weller in Cydonia. Then speak with Erick on your ship to recruit him permanently.
Where to find Ezekiel in Starfield
How to get: Recruit at Aggie's bar in Akila City's Stretch area (Akila - Cheyenne system).

Ezekiel is recruitable for the low, low cost of 0 Credits. You'll find him drinking at Aggie's bar in the rundown Stretch area in Akila City on the planet Akila (Cheyenne system). His scavenging Skill is useful if you want more Credits, as there's a chance you'll find more money in containers when travelling with Ezekiel.

How to get: Recruit at The Viewport in New Atlantis' spaceport area (Jemison - Alpha Centauri system).

We either missed Gideon the first time we explored The Viewpoint, or he likes to wander to other places occasionally. If you sit down and use the 'Wait' feature, Gideon should appear for you at The Viewpoint eventually.
Where to find Hadrian Sanon in Starfield
How to get: Complete the UC Vanguard questline.

To get Hadrian you have to complete 'A Legacy Forged', the last main UC Vanguard mission, then speak to Percival at TMD Headquarters on Mars. After that, go talk to Hadrian to recruit your Terrormorph-killing buddy for free!

Heller is one of the very first people you meet at the beginning of Starfield, but you don't actually get the chance to recruit him until you find him again while on the 'Back to Vectera' main mission - on your way to finding Barrett.
Where to find Jessamine Griffin in Starfield
How to get: Recruit at The Last Nova in The Key space station (Orbiting Suvorov - Kyx system).

The easiest way to recruit Jessamine is by joining The Crimson Fleet. If you don't join the fleet before entering the Kryx system, then the fleet will open fire on you. When safe to do so, dock at The Key and head to The Last Nova bar in the Reckoner's Core part of the Cargo Bay area to find Jessamine.

How to get: Found again during Back to Vectera main mission.

Supervisor Lin is an optional companion hire when you finish your activities on Vectera as part of the 'Back to Vectera' main mission. She's another free hire and is best assigned in an Outpost management role.

Lyle Brewer is found drinking in the small Aggie's bar in the rundown Stretch area of Akila City on the planet Akila. Lyle is a dab hand with shotguns, so give him your spares when you find good shotguns on your travels and he can be a very effective close-range damage companion.
Where to find Marika Boros in Starfield
How to get: Recruit at The Viewport in New Atlantis' spaceport area (Jemison - Alpha Centauri system).

Marika is found at The Viewport in New Atlantis, on the planet Jemison. She's one of the very first potential companions you come across in the game, so you might not have enough Credits to hire her immediately. She'll still be in The Viewport later if you get enough Credits and still wish to hire her.
Where to find Mathis Castillo in Starfield
How to get: Side with Mathis and the Crimson Fleet during Crimson Fleet questline and complete 'Legacy's End' mission.

It takes a while and a few crucial decisions to get Mathis in Starfield. First, you have to join The Crimson Fleet, and then on those Crimson Fleet missions you have to side with Mathis over anybody else when you get the chance. At the end of the questline, during Legacy's End, you then have to side with the Crimson Fleet over SysDef to finally be able to recruit Mathis after completing the mission.

Mickey is a suspicious character with an even more suspicious haircut, and you can find him in the bar area of the Astral Lounge on Neon. To get to the Astral Lounge, go to the Trade Tower in Neon's Core, the city's main hub, then go up the stairs to the club's entrance.

Rafael is an ideal pick to assign to an Outpost, but you have to wait until you complete the 'Entangled' main mission before you can recruit him. This is near the end of the main story, but Rafael is a free recruit, making up for the amount of time it takes to get him.

Just like Omari, Rosie is located at The Hitching Post in Akila City on the planet Akila, which is the saloon-like outside bar found on the right-hand side as you enter the main entrance of Akila City from the spaceport. Rosie is one of the few healing-focused companions in Starfield.

Sam Coe is another Constellation companion in Starfield, so he's linked to the main story, gets his own companion mission, and has some of the most interactions available with your character.
Sam's daughter, Cora, has to travel on the ship as well if you have him as a crew member, and after accepting 'The Empty Nest' quest you can't get rid of Sam as your companion until the quest is completed.

Sarah Morgan is yet another Constellation companion, so just like the others, she's linked to the main story, gets her own companion mission, and has some of the most interactions available with your character. Sarah's also the first Constellation companion you can recruit, even though Barrett is the first member you're introduced to.
Sarah is very much a 'good-aligned' character, so you can raise her approval by being charitable and helping people (and not doing evil or morally dubious things in front of her).

How to get: Recruit at the Madame Sauvage's Place in Neon's Ebbside area (Volii Alpha - Volii system).

Sophia Grace located inside Madame Sauvage's Place on Neon. To easily get to Madame Sauvage's Place, go through the Ebbside door beside the elevator that takes you back to the spaceport, in the middle of Neon's Core area. Look left after entering the door to spot Madame Sauvage's entrance. Just tell Sophia that you're okay with her being in a gang, and then you can recruit her.
