Backgrounds in Starfield are a crucial part of creating the character that you'll take through all of your adventures and tell your story with. A background is one of the first things you'll need to decide, and arguably one of the most crucial, as your background will determine what skills you start off with.
Creating your own character and choosing their background is just the beginning of your adventure in Starfield. The action RPG will let you explore the expanse of space, 280 years after humans first set foot on Mars. From then on, everything changed.
Here’s everything you need to know about Character Backgrounds in Starfield and the starting Skills explained, including advice on how to pick the best background for your playstyle.

Best Starfield Backgrounds
When it comes to what the best backgrounds in Starfield are, the answer is subjective to your playstyle.
If you’re all about in-your-face combat, for example, then you may want to consider the Solider background. This is because its three starting Skills - Boost Pack Training, Fitness and Ballistics - all give you an edge in combat by letting you use Boost Packs straight away, causing Ballistic weaponry to deal more damage and providing you with more oxygen, which you can use on sprint attacks.
If, however, you’re more interested in exploring the star systems and the planets they hold, then you may want to consider the Xenobiologist, Homesteader, Pilgrim or Explorer backgrounds as they all come with the Surveying Skill. This will allow you to begin Starfield with an additional optional zoom on the hand scanner, so you can investigate resources, fauna or flora at a further distance. (Incredibly useful when that object or being is far from friendly…)
It’s also worth considering any background which has either the Security or the Persuasion Skill as these can both come in very handy during Starfield. Without the Security Skill, and then increasing its rank, you can only pick Novice level locks, which could cause you to miss out on some useful loot. Persuasion, meanwhile, will make it easier to persuade various characters you encounter during your travels and this can provide various bonuses, such as avoiding combat.
As you can probably tell, the key to picking the right background for your playstyle is to consider the three Skills it automatically unlocks at the beginning of the game. Since you don’t have to invest any Skill Points to unlock these Skills, though you do need to invest points if you wish to increase their rankings, they can become the foundation of your build and leaves you free to focus on other useful Skills in Starfield’s opening hours.
It’s also important to note that in the Starfield Direct we saw how your background can unlock specific activities or bonuses. At the time of writing, we don’t know much about this additional feature, but it does seem to be linked specific to your choice, such as the Beast Hunter background letting you increase the payment from a quest about hunting down creatures. We’ll add more as we learn more.
Here are five backgrounds you may want to consider when starting Starfield, but, remember, the choice is subjective:
- Bounty Hunter - If you’re interested in some space ship combat, then this background will provide you with the Targeting Control Systems and Piloting Skills. Targeting Control Systems is a particularly useful Skill as it allows you to fire upon specific parts of an enemy vessel, such as the engines, which will help you board it. This background also has the Boost Pack Training Skill meaning you don’t have to invest any points in unlocking this feature and can use it to your advantage in combat from the get go.
- Cyber Runner - This background is ideal for any who wants to have a rogue-style build in Starfield coming with the Security, Stealth and Theft Skills. Having the Stealth Skill means you’ll begin the game with the Stealth Meter, which will let you know how detectable you are to foes. Theft, meanwhile, unlocks pickpocketing and you never know when rifling through someone’s pockets will come in handy.
- Diplomat - If you prefer to solve problems with words rather than guns, then this is the background for you. The Persuasion Skill lets you begin your Starfield journey with an increased chance of succeeding in persuading someone. Meanwhile, Wellness increases your health and Commerce grants you a small discount when purchasing from vendors or an increase in price if you’re selling items.
- Industrialist - Quite the interesting background here as the Skills it provides - Persuasion, Security and Research Methods - provide a mixture of bonuses. You get the bonuses we’ve already mentioned with both the Security and Persuasion Skills, while Research Methods reduce the resources for both crafting items and completing research projects. Something which will come in handy if you want to get stuck into the crafting and research mechanics for Starfield!
- Space Scoundrel - Want the Persuasion Skills, but also want to be ready for combat? Then become a Space Scoundrel! The Pistol Certification Skill will cause you to do more damage with this type of weaponry (very handy since the first weapon you get is a pistol). The Piloting Skill also makes travelling the stars a little easier by unlocking your ship’s thrusters.

Background Skills in Starfield explained
When you pick your background in Starfield, you'll also get three skills given to you that you start off with. The skills you get are determined by the background you choose, and at the time of writing, it seems as though you cannot change these.
Here's a list of all of the background skills in Starfield:
