Muslims now are an organized political force in Irving

by James Ragland, Dallas Morning News Something remarkable is happening in Irving, a city that, for the better part of a year, clumsily became a tinderbox for anti-Muslim madness. Time flies when you’re facing cultural bias and religious persecution. This is the town where Ahmed Mohamed, the “clock boy,” gained notoriety last fall for bringing a homemade project to school. Over the past 15 months, since Mayor Beth Van Duyne began stoking fears that Muslims were setting up a Shariah law court at an Irving mosque, the Muslim community hasn’t just turned the other cheek — it has rolled up its sleeves and gone to work. We noted last year that Muslims, who have generally refrained from city politics, had begun organizing get-out-the-vote drives and showing...

Is ISIS supposed to be a Muslim organization?

Aslam Abdullah, Ph.D; Director of Islamic Center, Las Vegas, Vice president of Muslim Council of America Will the US train Muslim Americans to take on ISIS The (Un) Islamic state of Iraq and Syria is an organization of individuals who coul easily put even beasts to shame. They belong to league of Hitler, ben Ladens and many more who promoted terror and murder for reasons they could not explain to themselves. They are against Christians, Jews, secularists and even Muslims. They are fighting a war they claim religious, which is overtly Satanic. Where do they get monetary support? Who supplies them weapons and ammunition? Who helps them in Europe and USA to recruit young Muslims who are usually unknown in their own communities for their commitment to Islam. The ISIS i...

A shariah myth

A pervasive Shariah myth The radical right’s pet theory about Dearborn—or any of the cities and neighborhoods featured on the no-go list. Yet the creeping-sharia myth is so pervasive that it’s been repeated by folks like Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, considered a 2016 presidential hopeful, and by failed 2010 Nevada U.S. Senate candidate Sharron Angle, a Tea Party adherent, among numerous other Republicans. Fox News was forcecher Terry Jones hopped on the Dearborn bandwagon, planning to to demonstrate against—yep—the nonexistent spread of sharia law. Stopped by a court, Jones returned in 2012, and again in 2014. He’s been to the city—and been tried in its U.S. and state-law governed court for breach of the peace in 2011, when he and a companion were released after being ord...

Humanity vs. murderers, not Islam

Michael Gerson, San Antonio Express News Fourteen grim anniversaries separated from Sept. 11, 2001, some memories still come in high definition, like flashes of a strobe light. An email from my deputy I read at home, five minutes before the first plane struck in New York: “Very little of note happening.” Headed in to the White House and seeing American Airlines Flight 77 on a low trajectory toward the Pentagon. Meeting with President George W. Bush a day later and hearing him say, for the first time, “We are at war.” All of official Washington rising to sing “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” at the National Cathedral. Sitting with Bush when the draft of an ultimatum to the Taliban was walked into the Oval Office — return falsely imprisoned Americans, clo...

Supreme Court Sides with Muslim Woman who was denied a job

Note by Mohammad Akhtar, President of MCA. It gives us great satisfaction to publish in the following the report of victory of a Muslim woman who went to the Supreme Court to defend her right based on her religion and got the verdict reversed in her favor. More important than anything, it makes Muslims at large feel proud of being American. it is the country we salute and love which stands for a principle and defends an insignificant woman against the powerful and gigantic corporation- Abercrombie & Fitch and restores her right to wear Hijab if that is what her religion is. Supreme Court Sides With Muslim Abercrombie Job Applicant over Head Scarf--2nd Update BY Dow Jones & Company, Inc. 1:31 PM ET 06/01/2015 WASHINGTON-The Supreme Court on Monday said a Muslim woman who applied...

Rep. Keith Ellison: Unrest comes from ‘affluent’ trying to keep control

Ben Kamisar, The Hill. Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) said Thursday that the riots and blight in West Baltimore are a result of "the affluent" using the justice system to keep "control" over the poor and working classes. “Excessive police force and staggering unemployment work together because what we’ve done in the United States is that we’ve said that the affluent part of our society is going to demand more tax breaks, more wealth, more privilege, leaving less for the less fortunate,” he said during an interview on CNN’s “New Day.” “The way we keep the less fortunate in control is policing and prisons — that’s the unfortunate formula that we’ve constructed.” Wednesday saw another relatively calm night in Baltimore, which on Monday faced in...

Holidays’ names stricken from next year’s Montgomery schools calendar

Holidays’ names stricken from next year’s Montgomery schools calendar By Donna St. George November 11 at 6:34 PM Tthe Montgomery County Public Schools building is seen in this file photo. (Sarah L. Voisin/The Washington Post) Christmas and Easter have been stricken from next year’s school calendar in Montgomery County. So have Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah. Montgomery’s Board of Education voted 7 to 1 Tuesday to eliminate references to all religious holidays on the published calendar for 2015-2016, a decision that followed a request from Muslim community leaders to give equal billing to the Muslim holy day of Eid al-Adha. In practical terms, Montgomery schools will still be closed for the Christian and Jewish holidays, as in previous years, and students will still get the sam...

Lobbying : A menace or Necessity for democracy?

Lobbying: A Menace or Necessity for Democracy? Exposition 2. Mohammad Akhtar,Ph.D, President of MCA Lobbying is an American phenomenon, which is new to Muslim migrants. They find it novel but more than that, they find it puzzling. We know bribery is wrong and illegal because an individual gives money to another individual for self- serving purpose that is against the collective interests. But in a similar way, if an individual or group gives money to another individual or group that is similarly counter to the interests of the larger segment of society, it should be equally wrong or illegal, regardless of the money involved being a big amount and given openly rather than secretly as done in bribery. If it is small money transacted between two people, it is considered theft. If it is...
